information I have collected about the McHugh's in my line. Lawrence and Michael are
common names, The oldest McHugh in my line - Richard, is documented as arriving in
Ontario with his family before 1840.

in Saginaw Michigan. He married ANNE KELLEY 1832 in County Sligo, Ireland.

Notes for RICHARD MCHUGH:
The McHugh family history in Ireland contains references to soldiers who served in the
Napoleonic Wars for the English. After the end of hostilities in the 1820's there
was a general economic depression in Ireland. Veterans were rewarded with grants of
land in Canada which was part of the English empire. Sending former soldiers to
relocate in Canada was also a way of securing Canada against agression from American and
French interests. (Anecdotal connection to Richard, not proven witrh any documentation)
Richard McHugh came to Canada from County Sligo Ireland, approximately 1835. His
first home was in Mara Ontario - Simcoe County near Georgian Bay. There were
many McHugh relatives living in Ontario by that time. This is documented in a
historical compendium "They came to Mara - Pioneers of Mara Township, circa
1829-1900" Published and edited by The Corporation of the Township of Mara. P.O. Box
130 Brechin Ontario, L0R1B0. Printed in Canada by the University of Toronto Press

Dear Bill Carney, My McHugh line came from Ballymote in Co. Sligo Ireland to
Victoria Co., Ontario Canada in 1828. My gr. gr. gr. grandfather, Roger McHugh was
granted the land for his service as a sergeant in the Peninsular Wars and at the Battle of
Waterloo where he fought with the Irish 27th Enniskillen division. He came with his
wife and young children. Other relatives of Roger's settled in nearby areas; some of
whom I have found a connecting record and some I only suspect are related. I have a
fairly extensive tree of these McHughs, many of whom emigrated to the western United
States as land was opened for settlement around the 1860s and 1870s.
I grew up in Essex Co., Ontario (though I now live in Michigan)
and was always curious about the McHughs who had settled in the area of Maidstone Township
around 1830 and had many descendants. I wondered if there could be a tie with my
line because of so many similar names and similarly named spouses but, I now believe that
if there is a connection it is likely too far back to find a record. The Maidstone
McHughs all seemed to have come from Co. Cavan.
Because I have been searching the Catholic parish registers for
both these families, plus the cemeteries in both Essex and Victoria Co., I have gathered a
few notes on them and would be happy to share if you are able to make a connection with
either line of the Irish-Canadian McHughs. Both McHugh lines were very active in
politics and have Judges, lawyers, senators, mayors, reeves and members of parliament in
their ranks.
Have chatted with many McHugh lines in the time that I have been
searching for my own and will let you know if I find any that bear a resemblance to those
you are searching or are looking in a similar time and place for their line.
Incidentally, the McHughs in my line married into the Brady
family from Co. Cavan and some of the Brady family emigrated to Bay City in Michigan.
So, some of my McHughs had relatives in Bay City but their name would be Brady.

I am responding about Lawrence Mc Hugh of Bay City, My name is Bonnie Mc Hugh and I live in Bay City. I have been doing our Mc Hugh Genealogy for sometime. I am a transplant from the Detroit area. My McHugh's were from Emmett, St. Clair Co. Michigan. I haven't done any Mc Hugh research in Bay City because I didn't think we had any relations here.
Do you know when & from where your Mc Hugh's got up to Bay City? Who is Lawrence's
parents, and do you know WHERE in Ireland they are from? My g-grandfather was
Michael Mc Hugh b. 1825. (I believe) in Crimlin, Kelmine, Co. Mayo.
He married Catherine Kelley ( I don't know where), but entered U.S. circa 1852 with
brothers Thomas, Martin, & John ( don't know about sisters) and went to Cincinnati;
stayed a time then headed to Michigan. His brother Thomas came to Michigan later around
1862. Martin & John never bought land in Michigan. Martin might have lived in Vermont.

I have Thomas Mc Hugh's birth listed from census' as 1825. I don't see any Lawrence's as sibling in either of these genealogies as to follow name preference.
