a) Note: Scott was born in Lenawee county, Michigan, on 11 August, 1851 [1854 according to Clare Bowen Molina's information]. He wanted to join the Army in 1863 when his father and brothers did, but was too young. In 1880 he was living at the home of his brother, Lewis Bowen. Clarisa Bowen also lived in the house and was probably Scott's wife [ Clara Elizabeth Ryan]. He had been living at Port Austin, Michigan when he married. Scott worked at a pail factory at the time of the 1880 census. He be came a "Marine Engineer" on the Great Lakes and operated various ships starting with sailing vessels which were later replaced by steam powered vessels. He retired in 1930. in 1884 he is listed as a "ship's captain" at Detroit, Michigan. In 1886 he is listed as a boarder at 704 Franklin, Detroit, Michigan. FRom 1890 to 1 891 his address was 52 Russell, Detroit, Michigan. In the 1910 and 1920 census he lived in Boyne City, Charlevoix, Michigan. At the time of his wife's dea th in 1926 he was living at 15315 Inverness, Detroit, Michigan. After his wife died he lived with his children. In 1930 he lived With his daughter, Mary Jane, and her husband, Sanford Wilson, at 1734 Delaware Avenue, Flint, Genesee, Michigan. In 1933 he was still living with the Wilson's, but they had moved to 2115 Lewis Street in Flint. His occu pation was listed as laborer. In 1936 the Wilsons and Scott had moved again to 1208 Mabel Avenue in Flint. He was still living with the Wilson's at 1505 Montana Avenu e, Flint, Michigan, in 1937. In 1941 he and the Wilson's had moved to 407 East 6th Street in Flint. Joseph Winfield Bowen died in Flint, Genesee, Michigan, at 1930 on 5 July, 1942 after a five week ilness complicated by chronic myocarditis. He was staying with Clarence and Mary Bowen at their home at 3605 Douglas Street when he passed away. He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Highland Park, Wayne, Michigan. His grave is #2, Lot 179, Section 16, beside the grave of his wife.
