Biography
Was an only child according to Catherine Brown. Gustave and AnnaBackelen listed as a laborer in the 1911 R.L.Polk directory, living at1108 Broadway, Bay City. listed as living at 417 McCormick, Bay City,in the 1914 1911 R.L.Polk directory Also listed at same address isJennie and Albertine. Anna is not listed in the 1914 directory.Catherine Cobley told me that when she was growing up there was apicture of a man in full military regalia in her living room. She wastold that it was Anna's mother's brother John Petersen or Petersturmthat was in the Swedish military. Gustav Backelin and family lefttheir home in Hudiksvall, Sweden on 5 May 1882 and boarded the ship"Marsdin" at Goteborg bound for England. They arrived in Hull,England and took a train or some other mode of transportation toGlascow, Scotland, then sailed to Larne, Ireland. They then took theship "State of Georgia" to New York, arriving on 25 May 1882.
